Post 16 offers a wide range of fantastic opportunities for you to get involved in.

Post 16 offers a wide range of opportunities for you to get involved in alongside your academic studies. We want you to really enjoy your time at Post 16 and whether that’s taking achieving your Duke of Edinburgh award, taking to the stage in the annual school musical, or keeping fit by playing a variety of sports – there is a lot on offer!

SPORT

Wednesday afternoons are dedicated to providing sporting and physical activity opportunities to all our Post 16 students. This includes a range of activities including:

  • Badminton
  • Volleyball
  • Fun Fitness Workouts e.g Body Pump and use of our Gym
  • Football
  • Netball
  • Table Tennis

In addition, there is a Men’s Football Team and a Netball team who compete in local league and cup competitions and play fixtures or train every Wednesday afternoon. Trials are held for the teams in early September.

We also run in conjunction with the Student Union, sporting events for Post 16 such as the universally enjoyed dodgeball tournaments and Cancer Research Race for Life annually.

The academy can also provide a host of volunteering opportunities within the Physical Education department in roles such as referees, assistant managers, match reporters or enrichment leaders. If students commit, we can subside relevant qualifications to support such roles.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Post 16 students routinely participate in The Duke of Edinburgh Award. The DofE Award is an internationally recognised scheme which helps young people push themselves personally and physically to achieve more than they ever thought possible. Over a period of 6 to 12 months, you  devote your own time to new activities, new skills and two mountainous expeditions to achieve your award. Students also get involved in volunteering, physical activity and skill development.

We offer Silver and Gold levels in the academy in Post 16. Anyone can join the Silver award and you do not need to have already achieved your Bronze. If you want to do Gold, you will need to have already achieved your Silver award, whether it be with us or anywhere else. Places are limited, so sign up when we launch it in early September.

Universities and employers value the The Duke of Edinburgh award and the qualities young people gain from doing it. You will become more organised, more independent as well as a team player and a more resilient individual. When you complete your Gold Award, you will have the opportunity to have it presented at the Palace in the presence of a member of the Royal Family.

DRAMA & MUSIC

Each year the Academy hosts its annual production, showcasing the talent of the students across all year groups. Approximately 100 students join together in different roles to perform a musical to a sell out audience.

For three nights students act, dance, sing, perform in the band or work backstage to ensure the audience leave with a smile on their face. Past productions include Hairspray, School of Rock and Grease amongst many more.

Frequently, Post 16 students take the lead, becoming someone the younger students look up to and aspire to follow in their footsteps.
