COURSE Overview

Health and social care is one of the biggest employers in the UK with around 1.4 million people employed by the NHS and 1.6 million employed in social care.

This course is for students who are interested in learning about the development of children and what they need to consider when working with children alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses.

Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements.
Course Length: 2 Years

This 2 year course consists of 4 units:

  • Unit 1: Children’s development (external assessment)

    The principles of development and how they are applied. Physical development from birth up to eight years. Cognitive development from birth up to eight years. Language development, including communication from birth up to eight years. Emotional development from birth up to eight years. Aspects of social development.

  • Unit 2: Human Biology and Health (external assessment)

    Investigate legal responsibilities and approaches to health and safety in early years settings. Recognise hazards and risks to children. The Early Years Framework and Safeguarding. Respond to Child Abuse

  • Unit 3: Play and learning (internal assessment)
    Examine types of play and learning activities and how they promote children’s learning and development. Investigate theoretical perspectives of learning and development in early childhood. Influences on current early years practice. Understand how to plan activities and experiences to support children’s play, learning and development.
  • Unit 4: Research and Reflective Practice in an Early Childhood Setting

    Understand types of information and data related to research into provision and practice in children’s care and education (0 – 8 years). Understand the purpose and impact of research in the children’s care and education sector (0 – 8 years). Know the purpose of reflective practice for those working in the children’s care and education sector (0 – 8 years). Understand and apply theories and approaches for reflective practice.

  • Unit 1: Externally assessed written exam
  • Unit 2: Externally assessed written exam
  • Unit 3: Internally assessed assignment
  • Unit 4: Internally assessed assignment

This qualification can lead to progression to the following degrees:
