COURSE Overview

The Extended Certificate is aimed at students who really enjoy IT and have a vocational or career interest in the subject. Most students who study for the course anticipate a future working in IT or studying an IT related subject at university.

Title: BTEC Nationals Information Technology AAQ (equivalent to one A Level)
Type: Vocational
Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements. Prior study of ICT is not essential.
Course Length: 2 Years

This 2 year course consists of 4 units:

  • Unit 1: Information Technology Systems
    Information technology systems, including the relationship between software and hardware, and the issues related to IT systems
  • Unit 2: Cyber Security and Incident Management
    Types of cyber security attacks, the vulnerabilities in networked systems and how to plan and respond to attacks
  • Unit 3: Website Development
    The development tools, techniques and processes used in website development and how to test usability, functionality and fitness for purpose
  • Unit 4: Relational Database Development
    Structure of data, data design and database management systems (DBMS).
  • Unit 1: Externally assessed written exam
  • Unit 2: Externally assessed written exam
  • Unit 3: Internally assessed assignment
  • Unit 4: Internally assessed assignment

There are many different careers in IT including web designer, systems analyst, computer games developer, user experience developer, graphic designer, social media marketing and many more!
