COURSE Overview
Biology is the scientific study of life and is a diverse subject, studying living things at various levels, from the tiniest of cells and organisms to entire ecosystems.
A-Level biology is a subject that combines theoretical and practical understanding with analytical skills. It is a dynamic field of study with cutting-edge science that is changing our understanding of the way living things work as well as solving global issues.
Being a STEM subject, it shows employers and universities that you have strong scientific and academic capabilities. Taking A Level biology will give you access to many degree courses and careers.

Entry Requirements: Standard entry requirements plus a minimum of a grade 6 in GCSE Biology or Combined Science.
Course Length: 2 Years
The specification content is divided into five teaching modules and each module is further divided into key topics, with practical skills woven throughout.
- Module 2 – foundations in biology
- Module 3 – exchange and transport
- Module 4 – biodiversity, evolution and disease
- Module 5 – communication, homeostasis and energy
- Module 6 – genetics, evolution and ecosystems
This is a two year course with all exams taking place at the end of Year 13.

Science careers directly related to biology include medical professions, dentistry, veterinary, pharmacy, physiotherapy, biomedical engineering, research science (life sciences), microbiology, marine biology, conservation, ecology, environmental management, food science, agricultural engineering, zoology and sport and fitness.
The transferable skills developed would also be useful in a diverse range of careers including: law, business analysis, psychology (biology is a requirement for some psychology degrees).
