Global Youth Award Winners!

Global Youth Award Winners!

A recently established climate action group, set up by six students from Macmillan Post 16 have received a prestigious ‘Global Youth Award’ for their work this year.

BYCA (Boro Youth Climate Action) was set up in February 2020, with the aim being to educate young minds on the importance of climate action, and to help create programmes to make Middleborough more sustainable. In 2021 BYCA aim to deliver an education programme for schools with pupils of all ages, aimed at informing and developing students' understanding of climate action and what they can do to help. They also plan to run a town-wide litter pick with the aid of authorities.

So far this year, the group has held meetings with the local council, as well as Andy McDonald, MP for Middlesbrough, and are involved with the local authority in developing greener strategies for the town.

The group were informed that they had been nominated for the UK Environment Award at the 'Global Youth Awards' in November. Normally held in London in December, this year's award ceremony was instead held online on Saturday 5 December, when the group found out they had won. They received their award in the post this week.

The award recognises the achievement of the group and the tremendous hard work each member has put in over the course of the year. Founder of the group Shayne said, "This award is a great way to recognise all the work each member of the group has put in this year and gives us encouragement to work even harder for next year".

We are incredibly proud of our students for their work put into this group this year and look forward to seeing what 2021 will hold!
