Sociology by definition is the 'study of society'. It is a fascinating and diverse subject that looks at how society functions, the institutions that make up our society (such as the education system, the family and the criminal justice system) and how these institutions can influence one another. We explore historical changes to our society and the impact that this has had on our lives as well as studying the ever-changing post-modern world around us. It is an intriguing discipline that aims to offer a systematic explanation of how society is structured and how it operates in order to explain real societal issues such as inequality, poverty and crime, as well as aiming to provide solutions to these societal problems.

If you enjoy debating and asking questions such as: Why do people commit crime? Does where you live impact on your future life-chances? Are women still disadvantaged in our society? Is childhood becoming an era of toxicity? If so, then sociology might be the course for you.

The A Level is new to most students and has excellent cross-curricular links with psychology, criminology, RS and politics.
